What's the Difference Between Merino & Synthetic Layer？
Merino Wool Base Layer regulates microclimate through its natural fiber structure, gradually absorbing sweat and converting it into sustained warmth while lanolin components break down odor molecules, forming a biological thermal layer in multi-day cold exposure.
Synthetic Base Layer relies on chemical wicking tech for rapid moisture expulsion, with microfiber networks enabling instant heat evaporation during high-intensity activities—though evaporative cooling risks sudden temperature drops. The former trades biologically-driven resilience for enduring comfort; the latter leverages industrial precision for tactical bursts.
Compare the Material
| Comparison Criteria | Merino Wool Base Layer | Synthetic Base Layer |
|---|---|---|
| Main Difference | Natural, odor-resistant, temperature regulating | Fast-drying, elastic, ideal for intense activity |
| Material | Natural Merino Wool (pure or blended) | Polyester, Nylon, Spandex blends |
| Warmth | ★★★★★ Excellent thermal insulation |
★★★☆☆ Decent but depends on thickness |
| Comfort | ★★★★★ Soft, itch-free, ideal for layering |
★★★☆☆ Functional but may feel synthetic |
| Odor Resistance | ★★★★★ Natural anti-odor properties |
★★☆☆☆ Prone to odor over time |
| Breathability | ★★★★☆ Great for regulating body temp |
★★★☆☆ Good in dry conditions |
| Durability | ★★★☆☆ May wear faster without care |
★★★★★ Highly abrasion-resistant |
| Price | ★★★☆☆ Higher cost but premium feel |
★★★★★ Budget-friendly and accessible |
| Best Scenarios | Full-day alpine skiing
Cold climates Multi-day tours |

How to Choose Your Perfect Ones?
We highly recommend that you choose the right snow clothing for your needs and don't just stick to the parameters!
Core Principle: Moisture is the Enemy
A base layer’s mission: wick sweat relentlessly while maintaining thermal efficiency.
Key Metrics: Breathability (for high-intensity) | Insulation (for static/cold)
Critical Fail = Cotton (traps moisture, freezes you like ice pop).

Right Fabric for Your Adventure
Match Fabric to Terrain
- Resort Skiing (Groomed Trails/Family): Merino Blend (180-200 GSM)
- Alpine Skiing (Downhill/Racing): Synthetic Polyester.
- Backcountry Ski Touring/Expeditions: Merino Wool (200+ GSM).
- Freeride/Off-Piste Skiing: Merino-Synthetic Blend.
- Ski Mountaineering/Ice Climbing: Reinforced Synthetic Fibers.
- Freestyle/Park Skiing: Lightweight Mesh Synthetics.
Quick Logic:
- "Bombing icy slopes? Drenched in sweat?" → Synthetics
- "Multi-day trek in -30°C?" → Heavyweight Merino
- "Park laps + icy chairlifts?" → Merino blend

Hidden Pain Points
- Synthetic Snags: Odor buildup after friction (trapped bacteria).
- Merino Myths: "Delicate" rep—reality: modern knitting resists pilling.
Field Fixes: - Cold/Wet Conditions: Double-layer lightweight Merino.
- High Friction Zones: Seamless synthetic sleeves under pack straps.

Three-Layer System
The concept of the three-layer system originated from outdoor activities, designed to help people stay warm and dry in extreme weather conditions. Through a scientific layering approach, the base layer wicks moisture, the mid layer provides insulation, and the outer layer offers wind and water resistance while maintaining breathability. Although initially developed for mountaineering and exploration, this method is now widely used in sports like skiing, ensuring comfort and performance in various environments.
